I do open ocean rowing in an open water scull. When I use the Routing
function and enter a bunch of waypoints, it doesn't seem to jump from
one way point to another as I go along the route. How do I know when I
have passed a waypoint and am being pointed to the next? Second, when
I ask it to reverse direction, it doesn't, but keeps the old route, it
won't reverse to guide me back along the route I came. Is there
something I might be doing wrong, like how I set the magnetic compass
vs. gps, or do you all think this is a warranty issue? I have a race
off Newport this weekend and am looking to fix my understanding of how
to operate the gpsmap 76CSx. Thanks!

You have an active route right? Activated in the Off Road mode?

If have data boxes displayed and one of them is showing the name of the
waypoint you are going to, the name will change when it rolls over to
the next waypoint.

Go the Active Route page (or Route page if the route is not activated
yet), cursor down to highlight the route, press Enter (you'll see the
list of waypoints in the route), press Menu, and choose Reverse Route.

Yeah, you just need to familiarize yourself with it. There is probably
nothing wrong with the GPS, it is your head. :>) You manual tells you
how to calibrate your magnetic compass by walking in circles. Put fresh
batteries and do it before each race if it is important. Otherwise, the
GPS receiver will generate accurate enough headings (as long as you are
moving 1 or 2 MPH or so). Use Magnetic, not True, headings and take the
default deviation for where you are.

If you download this text file:

http://www.vom.com/jack/misc/090227_GPSMAP%2076Cx%20Settings.txt

and go through it from top to bottom you'll have your 76CSx preferences
and settings at a good starting point for marine and highway use (I'm a
licensed Master, and I do some deliveries).

There are a *lot* of setting and preferences, they can be pretty
confusing at first. Changing to the ones in the file above will get
them all right for what you want to do and help you learn them.

Also, going through that text file will also familiarize you with most
of the preferences and settings on the 76Cx (I don't have a 76CSx). So
other than the additional 76CSx pages and settings for the flux gate
compass and barometer in yours, you'll be in good shape.

You can probably make it. You only need to change a few settings to go
from street and highway use to marine use. The ones I change (you would
have to have them all preset to those in the text file above first) are:

1 - I change the units from statute to nautical.

2 - I turn the Autozoom off.

3 - I change to Track Up from North Up.

The locations (pages and menus) for those three setting are explained in
the text file, I'll not explain it again now. If you have any trouble
getting through that, feel free to email me or post the questions here
and you'll get some help.

Once you get those setting changes made, make up some routes in
MapSource you can walk through on foot. Place a number of waypoints, in
a straight line, fairly close together, along a nearby street or road.

Change the three settings I mentioned for marine use, activate the
route, and walk through it. You'll see all the changes, track error,
and all the other things you'll want to know on the water.

Good luck!
