Could you elaborate on the last of these: "Voice recognition doesn't like my
English accent!"

I was thinking about the 865 but in the end rejected it (in favour of the
765) because I suspected that the VR might not work well enough to be useful.

>looking at Garmin nüvi 855 any user opinions on this unit? Thanks

We have had one for about five months now.

I am pleased with it. There are shortcomings compared to our old
StreetPilot models, but the beautiful screen, spoken street
names, Lane Assist, Junction View, speed limit display, etc.,
make the tradeoff worthwhile.

Plus it's dirt cheap compared to what I paid for the
StreetPilots.

BTW, you CAN completely power it down. Unplug it from power and
hold the power switch to the left for about 10 seconds, but not
long enough for it to reboot.

There is a nice utility you can download to increase the max
volume on the speaker, as well as customize the voice prompts.
Instead of "Recalculating", ours now says "Oops. I did it again".

For an extensive user review, look at the first one on Amazon:

Belay that. I was confusing the 855 with the nuvi I had before.

Sorry.

That's very possible - it still confuses me after living here for 10 years. I
was recently on the phone to someone locally who was talking about a bowl he
had seen, which I heard as 'ball'.
