I bought a nuvi 760 from Costco online a few weeks ago and noticed that it
had City Navigator North America NT 2008 version. When I registered on the
Garmin website, they said I was entitled to a free update to the 2009
version, so I downloaded it with the USB connection from my computer. I'm
not certain, but I think Garmin allows one free update for any GPS unit if
is registered and purchased new. I haven't used it much yet, so I can't say
if the roads have been updated to any extent. I noticed that a few shopping
POIs in my neighborhood were updated, although there is a Target store that
has been open almost a year now and is not listed. Another strange thing is
that a Wal-Mart that was scheduled to open later this year appears in the
POI list, but it was never built. Also, the unit calculated a route that
took me to a dead-end road that was supposed to be extended, but never was.
Too bad that you don't get better accuracy for the amount you are paying for
an upgrade.
You can preview the 2009 version of the roads using the map viewer on
Garmin's website to see if the update is worth it for you. I live in a
relatively new area that is continually being developed, so I did the
upgrade. My only complaint is that the my unit should have been shipped
with the latest version (2009) and my "free" update should apply to the next
version; e.g. 2010 or whatever. Looks like I'll have to pay for the next
one.

The map making people, like Navtec have crews out to check roads and POIs,
but they have other sources too. My guess is that Wal Mart has better
contacts than Target, thus, they go the update.

Your unit may have been shipped weeks before the upgrade was available. You
only got the upgrade free as it is a short time from purchase to new map.
People buying units withthe 2009 map now won't be getting the 2010 for free
either.
