Why should someone have to ask? Doesn't that just mean that some
customers who do not yet know about Mapsource may never know?

Some of the early buyers of the preloaded models that called and asked
for the mapping on DVD were told that it was not included because it was
not needed. And the statement that it was "not needed" was based on the
fact that those models could not accept uploaded routes from a MapSource
installation.

Many buyers did not agree with that and wanted it just for route
planning if for nothing else. Garmin started giving it to them, then
selling it to some others, and some even had requests for the mapping
refused. As it is, I don't know that Garmin has a stated or clear
policy about it to this day.

I tell people that want it to call 1 800 800 1020 and ask for it. And
if they don't get it, call again later and ask someone else.

If Garmin was smart at all (and no one has ever accused them of that)
they would either include it for free or let all buyer get the mapping
for a nominal charge that covers the production and mailing costs. It
would create good will nothing else.

Even better, how about a link to download the software after
registering online?

Why ask? $$$$$$$$$, of course. Let's say they sell 600,000 units a year and
out of those, only 20,000 people want or care about mapping. That means
580,000 don't want that CD. If it costs 50˘ to add it to each package, they
just save a bundle of money. Pennies count in retail trades and a penny in
manufacturing cost becomes five pennies in the retail price.

The people that frequent this newsgroup are above average in the user
category. Most buyers of the NUVI series are soccer moms that use the GPS to
find Billy's house to pick him up on the way to the field and they don't
care about mapping.

Since we are just playing silly buggers with numbers here ED, why not
factor in the $500 apiece for 5,000 customers of lost sales for every
person who did not buy a Garmin next time around because they were
pissed off about not being told about Mapsource, or supplied it as a
matter of course. You could fuck around with numbers like this all
night if you wanted.

That is why ask!
