To follow up to my own post, I believe the cause of the loss of
system software was my impatiens. After I transferred the update the unit
restarted and "hung" on "software loading". After waiting for "ages" I
figured the unit was locked up and turned the unit off. That probably
screwed it up. Garmin support pushed the software back into my unit and
when it restarted it hung up again but Garmin support said this was
normal. Eventually it did finish loading and all is well.
All in all Garmin support was very knowledgeable and helped me
out very quickly. The only glitch was the first rep I spoke to who asked
me if I used the PC or Mac version of the WebUpdate software. When I
explained that I did in fact use the Windows version and besides, I would
not be able to use the Mac version she told me that I could in fact run
the Mac software. I did not argue with her but after the call I
downloaded the Mac version and guess what! windows has not the first clue
of what to do with it....
Anyway, Thanks to Garmin I'm back up and running.
