I bought and returned a Nextar I4-BC GPS unit, great picture in the
carport but impossible to see anythiing in the sunlight. the same with
a Garmin Nuvi 650. Does anybody manufacture a decent lcd screen that
can be used in daylight?. I tried a "glare shield" and it was of no
help. the units work great at night, but most of my traveling is done
in the daytime.

I have had several Garmin units 9(the latest is a GPSMap 60CSx) and they all
can be seen easily in *direct* sunlight. On the dashboard of a car it can
be a different story, and there it depends on the situation. The general
problem is that your eyes adapt to the bright light conditions outside the
car, and low contrast is then more of a problem in areas that are much less
bright, like some areas inside your car. Whether direct sunlight on the gps
helps or hinders in the car depends on the angle of the sun and the angle
from the gps to your eye.

The larger the screen the better you should be able to see the displayed
information in adverse lighting situations. Basically this is just because
the streets, letters etc. are larger and easier to make out.

It helps to turn up the backlight to full brightness.

Does that have automatic brightness setting? If so turn that off and
turn the brightness up manually.
