My c340 has reset itself for the second time. All that has to happen
for an accidental reset is for the screen to be pushed while powering
the unit on. This last reset occured because I had the Garmin in its
own specifically made tight fitting traveling case that automatically
puts pressure on the screen. I rested my foot on my soft luggage
that contained the Garmin travel bag and that just happened to
push the on switch. Once done there is no recovery of the favorites.
So how can I protect them? With the use of the software
"POI Loader" I made a "Custom POI" option on my c340 menu.
I noticed that these custom POI's were still intact after the
accidental reset so I assume I could just convert all my favorites
to custom POI's, but how do I do this?
Could I use another software program to repopulate the favorites
if I run into another accidental reset? Software like nRoute or
MapSource?

I suggest using MapSource. You can upload and download all the POI. I
also find it easier to enter POI using a laptop keyboard and then
downloading the POIs rather than entering them directly into the GPS
receiver.
