I just purchased my first GPS - a Legend Cx. I've been having much fun
experimenting with it the past few days, but I've run into a problem I
can't seem to solve.
I've installed MetroGuide North America v6 and have created a few
routes around town. The routes all calculate properly on the PC, but
they don't seem to transfer properly to the GPS. On the GPS, the
routes consist of straight lines between the waypoints, instead of
following the roads. And when I select Navigate from the Route screen,
the route shown bears absolutely no resemblence to what I originally
created on the PC - it doesn't even pass through the waypoints.
I was reasonably certain I've set up everything both on the GPS and in
MapSource, but now I'm not sure. Is the problem with my setup or do I
have an issue with the GPS? I must admit I'm not impressed with the
documentation from Garmin.
I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

It can only route from waypoint to waypoint. You need City Navigator for
autorouting.

I agree with Klatch that MetroGuide-NA is not designed by Garmin to
support autorouting on your GPS so if possible see if you can exchange
it and get the CityNavigator-NA software.
If that's not an option then look into the freeware 'SendMap' program
(google should find internet download sites). It can help you get
around some of the limitations of MetroGuide.
BTW, the current version of either MetroGuide-NA or CityNav-NA is v8,
version 6 is over two years old.

I understand that Metroguide won't autoroute on the GPS, but maybe I'm
suffering from a nomenclature problem. What I'm doing is selecting the
waypoints in the MapSource software on the PC and creating the route
there - then transferring that route (which does follow roads) to the
GPS. By my definition I wouldn't consider that autorouting on the GPS.
Quoting from the description on the Garmin Metroguide page:
"Will automatically create point-to-point routes in MapSource on the
PC"
and
"Trip and waypoint management feature lets you transfer waypoints,
routes and tracks between your Garmin GPS and your PC".
So if I want to transfer any sort of route to my GPS, should I get the
CityNavigator s/w? I would have thought based on the descriptions on
the Garmin website that Metroguide would have been sufficient for what
I wanted.
Thanks very much for the help.

When you transfer the route that way the only things actually
transferred are the locations where the route makes a turn from one
road to another. So the route as shown on the GPS won't be shown
following the roads but rather as a set of connected straight line
segments. That may still be usable, but not nearly as nice as having
true auto-routing.

That would be my recommendation if you can still exchange the
MetroGuide software and just pay the difference for CityNavigator. If
that's not an option then you may want to look at
http://forum.brighthand.com/showthread.php?t=220646 for some
alternatives.
