I bought one of these a few weeks back and it never managed to synch up with
a NuLink server. Garmin replaced it with a new unit after they determined
that the original was not working correctly. The replacement worked fine
(including NuLink) for a day or so and then began intermittently turning
itself off in the middle of a trip. The connections to the power socket,
GPS holder, and GPS itself all appeared to be made properly and the unit
could be powered back up with the power button right after it powered itself
down.

Has anyone else been having problems with the 1690?

That's the same problems I had with the first one and the NuLink
service still isn't working properly.
Garmin are blaming their Service Provider.
I told them instead of pointing finger work with whoever to fix the
problem or ditch them.
This is not acceptable.

So far as I know the service povider is AT&T, the same provider that seems
to have a rep for dropped calls. I've not had much trouble with NuLink
since getting the replacement 1690, though it will fail to get weather or
other NuLink services once in a while. The new 1690 does power itself down
about once a week or so. Maybe it is overheating.
