Hi.
I have a 660 and I want to update the map. I have Europe NT 2008 (FID
284) (Is this the *latest* europe map?) installed and unlocked on my
PC. When I try to upload it to my 660 it says there isn't enough room.
I assume that I have to delete the old map first.
So, I want to find out a bit about the files that are in my 660. Which
files are the maps themselves? What are the other files? (POI's I
know.)
And, as an aside, when I want to upload an audio book or music file,
which directorys do I use to seperate the two? There are two different
menus to control these on the 660.
Thanks for helping a nuvi newby.
Hi,
I have a partial answer to your question. The primary map file is
called gmapprom.img at the root level. As I wanted to be cautious, I
backed up all of the Garmin files and folders to my hard disk. Another
way to free up space is to delete most of the foreign language files
from the Voice folder on your Garmin unit. You can always add them
back in when you use the Garmin auto updater as they now show up again
for me to download if I wish.

I don't have 660 (I have Nuvi 680), and I don't think I wanna risk my luck
to overwrite the pre-loaded map with other or newer map. Or I would upload
it/them to *external* memory card instead. And I haven't uploaded to
internam memory to share my personal experience, but reading enough text
message here about "not enough space"
Me? my Nuvi 680 came with CN v2008, and my nephew bought me the TOPO 2008
(I have no need but he may need it now and then to find the hunting area),
and while having nothing to do and can't stay away from trouble. So I tried
to upload the TOPO and CN v2008 to my external memory Transend 8GB SDHC and
they work fine.
1. First, it took me around 3 days or so to upload the whole TOPO 2008 to
the external memory, and Nuvi 680 didn't recognize it. It turned out that
it has something like 2025 blocks limited, and the TOPO 2008 may have more
than 4000 blocks.
This one ended up around 4GB which is about twice larger than most
internal memory.
2. I then uploaded part of the TOPO to enternal memory and it works fine.
