If you were Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options
but Steve Blackwood's post about multiple GPS units with
microSD cards got me thinking.
I'm probably missing something, but other than ethics what's
to stop this?
Let's say 5 friends get together and buy xxCSx units. One
buys the Maps, unlocks them and dumps them onto microSD
cards for his friends??
Gotta be something blocking doing that. I can't believe
Garmin would let something that obvious go by.
Granted, it'd be a bit of a PITA but sounds like it'd be
possible.

interal code) of the GPS units. Replace your GPSr with an identical one & the
unlock won't work any more. You can freely copy them to memory cards, but the
GPSr won't read them successfully.

Thank you both. Told ya it was probably a dumb question. ;-)
I found it hard to believe that Garmin would let such a
thing be possible. I didn't think of transfering the serial
number with the maps. Too simple. ;-)
Thanks.

If you buy maps that are pre-installed on cards, then you can use this

card in any GPS, but you can't make copies of it. The code is then
associated with the serial number of the card, not of the GPS.

There is. The maps will only work on the GPS that has the electronic
serial number corresponding to the unlock code used when the maps were
loaded from the PC to the microSD card. The other GPS receivers will
give a message that the maps could not be unlocked and the maps will
not be displayed.
