Hello,
Would anyone know which of the following would be the best way to get
a more accurate point horizontally and vertically I am using a Garmin
GPSmap 76csx?

1. Set the gps on the point and let it average for one hour or so.

2. Set the gps on the point, turn on the tracking mode set to one or
two second interval, let it collect for an hour or so then average the
collected points.

Any input will be appreciated,.

Thank you,
Rick

I have used both methods several times with a 76cs and found the waypoint
averaging (your #1) to be more repeatable. I get varying results from the
track method with horizontal variations of several feet. The vertical
accuracy of either method is close to useless.

The only way to get an accurate point is measure your position in a map
and type it in as location. Every location you get from the satelites is
approximate and changes in a kind of random way. Even the average
position is an appriximate and will not be accurate. How far it will be
off is again random. It looks like some lottery ;-)

I am not a scientist, not the satellite keeper, but from my very little
knowledge (from least to NONE), I would say even there is some difference
base on the satellites are THOUSANDS of MILES (20-30K miles?) so few yards
or few miles won't be very far off?
