I generally use a Garmin Nuvi and it always tells me where to go but I
wanted to try something completely different. So last week I got the
DeLorme bundle and tried that on a netbook. Zowwie! Netbook screen gives
all kind of data and stuff! But then I downloaded the Google Earth Maps and
found that it does not interface with the DeLorme receiver. Bogus! So
today I went to my local Fry's and happily they had the Garmin bundle in
stock and it was only like sixty bucks. So I have me another regular sized
notebook computer and I will load the Garmin software package on that after
I get done taking my dog to the dog park.
In about three weeks I will be making a road trip from Las Vegas, Nevada to
Bakersfield, California and I will be running all three as a sort of
personal GPS test. I will have the Nuvi stuck to the windshield as always
and the netbook sitting on top of the dash, and the notebook on the
passenger seat running the Garmin receiver with either the Garmin software
package or the Google Earth Maps deal.
The only interesting thing about this is that there are about three mountain
passes between Las Vegas, Nevada and Bakersfield, California. There is one
just south of the Nevada line on Interstate 15 and then there is a little
one near Mojave, California with about 10,000 windmills and then there is a
scenic one as you drive through Tehachapi, California which is about less
than an hour from Bakersfield,California. So I want to see if I can get some
topo map deal running which would be fun to watch. We shall see about that.
I will have wires and chargers and adapter kits all over my car front seat
area but so what?
By the way, they sell these inverter thingies that you plug into you car 12
volt outlet and somehow they generate regular household current and you can
plug anything into them that does not draw a lot of current. Like almost
any electronic device. One time I was driving from Las Vegas, Nevada to
Bakersfield, California and I had this TV with a built in DVD player that I
was taking down there to my family to leave as a gift but I doubted that my
little inverter thingie would power a TV. But it did all the five hour way
and it did not overheat or shut off or anything. I had a couple of movies
with me and the TV played them but I could not really watch them because I
was watching the road but I could at least hear them.
So if you want a small gift or stocking stuffer for somebody you love you
should maybe think of getting them one of them car inverter thingies because
most people would not buy one for their own self. But they do work and they
are fun to mess around with when you are driving or riding in a car.

By the way, for reasons unknown to me, I rather like your screwed up
grammar and may start using it my own self. See what I did there? :-)

My screwed up grammar is an homage to the Beverly Hillbillies old TV show.
You put in some extra words where they are not needed.
But I still say that one of them thirty dollar car inverters would make a
good gift for almost anybody. Like instead of buying a car charger for
every device you own you just buy or are gifted one inverter and then you
just bring your wall charger if you want to use your device. Not any big
deal on the surface but if you had one you would like it.
I noticed that you said that you have had a car inverter for fifteen years
and you know their worth.
It will not change your life, but it can be fun and practical at the same
time. Sort of like a GPS.
And we wonder why we have to create laws to dis-allow cell phones,
when we have folks like this with computers, TV, DVD all playing while
driving..
Love the mountains across the area -
hopefully you'll be watching your electronics while driving and....

They make those laws just to thwart people like me. I will try to keep the
vehicle between the lines.
What I really need is a driver. That way I could play with my toys for five
hours.
