Have just upgraded my Nuvi to a 1340 and when registering it was
informed I have till 5th May to obtain the free map upgrade. I
obviously want to get the most up-to-date map so is it better to wait
till as close to that date as I can or will it matter much. How often
are these maps updated?
Regards and thanks in advance

The map update is a download and I think you can do this at any time during
the first month of use. In other words in the unlikely event that they
brought out an update soon after you upgraded, you could still download the
newer version while you were eligible. For the European version of City
Navigator the updates come out two or three times a year (Garmin say 'up to 4
times),
Be warned that the download takes a long time - 2 or 3 hours with a 10 MB
link.

I would wait until close to May 5th. When I bought my 855 I didn't think

Responsive to Syke's question: Garmin will issue a new map version 2
but I defy anyone here to show a pattern that you could predict within a
couple of weeks when the maps will be released.
The other thing to consider is that you're only allowed ONE free update

complete the online registration!
On another note, I stopped by Sam's Club to pick up some items and
noticed that several of the newer Garmin GPS units they were selling
(and the prices were between ~ $130 and ~ $250) are now bundled with
BOTH lifetime traffic updates/reports and Lifetime Map Subscription.
I'm wondering if this was a special deal cut by Sam's Club (and maybe
Costco - haven't yet been in there to see) or if it represents a new
marketing plan by Garmin. Soooo... if you're looking for an upgrade in
your GPS unit, take a look at Sam's Club or...

Responsive to Syke's question: Garmin will issue a new map version 2
days after you upgrade... you can almost guarantee it<g> Seriously,
there is no set date for release. True they're released 4 times a year
but I defy anyone here to show a pattern that you could predict within a
couple of weeks when the maps will be released.
The other thing to consider is that you're only allowed ONE free update
(not that there's much of a chance of two updates coming along in any
given 30 day period<g>) within that 30 day window. Save your update
until the last day or two to be safe and note that's 30 days from the
