I purchased a nuvi 850 about 2 yrs ago, For the first time I
attempted to use a Garmin pre-programmed map card, but the nuvi won't
recognize it. The screen states that no extras have been loaded. Any
suggestions?

I called Garmin for help. After a long wait I was switched to a
software specialist. The solution: remove the battery and then
reinsert it. Apparently the 800 series resets itself when problems
occur.

It sounds like you are talking about the older Garmin GPS as my
understanding that it won't be easy to remove the cover of newer Nuvi to
remove the battery.

According to https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=33922#specsTab
the 855
has a removable rechargeable battery.

I don't own the Nuvi-855, and you are right about what Garmin says at
their web page. But what Garmin states at their web page is one thing, how
to remove or it's easy to remove or not is another thing.
Example all older models used AA betteries so they had the option to open
the battery door to change the batteries. Some older Nuvi models have
couple small screws in the back that you can unscrew them to open the case.
And like in other thread we were talking about several different model,
especially the Nuvi-680 someone posted the link to Youtube showing how to
open the Nuvi-680
And if you watch the video then you will find that there is no screw on
the back but hidden in the pop-up antenna. Or you will have to open and
remove the attenna to find 2 hidden screws to open the case, then more
screw(s) to get to the battery.
