My Nuvi 770 is two years old and I wanted to install Mapsource so I
could do custom POIs. The only Mapsource download I could locate on
the Garmin website was 6.16.2, which requires a previous installation
of MapSource.
I searched my software CD collection, but I don't have anything from
Garmin.
What do I do? (I'll admit I'm not a GPU guru.)

Then you should be able to install MapSource that you had already
downloaded.
There won't be any detailed street map though--just a world base map.
I believe you could uninstall Training Center once MapSource has been
successfully installed.

You may want to call Garmin and tell them what they forgot to send you. Or
just tell them that you need MapSource to print the route, tranffer the
Favorites etc. and hope they still send you free DVD.
You don't need to tell them that you bought it 2 years ago, if they ask
(they usually don't) then tell them you just got it (if not yet registered).
