The 12v power adapter is huge, barely fits in the outlet, and blocks my cup
holder. I do not plan to use the traffic feature. Is a smaller adapter
available?

I use a Y-adapter which uses two short cords, which has a smaller
plug, and brings the jacks far enough away that it does not block
anything. I have a use for the second jack, but alternatively, you
can get a simple extension. Radio Shack, Pep Boys, etc, all have
them.

Garmin sells a auto power adapter that does not have the FM-TMC receiver
built into it, I think that is smaller:

And the nuvi can also be powered via its mini-USB port. There are after
market auto to mini-USB power adapters that are reputed by the sellers
to work with the nuvi 660. Here is a typical one:

I cannot vouch for that seller or the goods, that is just an example.

Jack - The 6xx nuvi series can be charged via usb, but not
'powered'. As soon as power is detected on the usb connector, the
units go into PC-connected mode. I saw a reference somewhere where
you can short two pins together and therby modify that behavior, but I
have not investigated further. I couldn't get your tiny link to work
through my isp -- perhaps that seller is claiming to supply a modified
cable. But I can verify that 'standard' usb cables with 'standard' AC-
>usb or 12V-lighter-plug->usb jacks simply put the 6xx into PC mode.

You're right, I had forgotten about that behavior on the nuvi. And the
seller does not mention that the cable was only good for charging. Here
is a long URL from a search for "nuvi dc" that will produce some
candidates of possible interest:

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=nuvi+dc&category0

I'm not sure of the details, but I think that mini-USB cables are
sometimes given a "personality" by adding a resistor of a specific value
in the plug (which has one more conductor than the standard USB plug).
That is what accounts for some devices that will not charge from generic
chargers and have to have the more expensive OEM charger to be charged.

And that may also have to do with the nuvi that go into Mass Storage
Mode when connected and account for the fact that you may be able to
modify the behavior by modifying a cable.

I sometimes use a mini-USB cable and auto DC adapter to power my 76Cx
when I'm using it on cards and boats. The mini-USB socket on the 76Cx
is a little less robust than the proprietary round four pin DC/RS-232
connector so I have to be careful not to strain the connection any.
