Why does my Nuvi 350 show one distance to a destination in the list of
recent selections and a different distance to the same destination once the
destination is selected and the route is calculated? Does the list show "as
the crow flies" distances? The manual doesn't explain this.

I believe that's exactly right. How is the device supposed to know the
distance from ones current location other than "staright line" until a route
is calculated?

Until a route is calculated, the only possible measurement is a straight
line. Possibly a great circle route if the distance is far enough. I've
never checked for that :-)
