Last week I made my first NuMaps Lifetime upgrade. The process went smoothly
and I finished with the new maps installed on both my PC and Nuvi (as I
selected), but some questions still remain about the upgrade procedure.

I was left with the impression that map data was downloaded twice, in
different forms, first the map data to be used on the PC followed by the map
data to the GPS.

My questions are:

1. If I choose (in the advanced options) to download map data just to
the PC, will I be able to use Mapsource to send the maps to the Nuvi, in a
process similar to the DVD updates I have done in the past? I believe the
answer is yes, but just would like to be sure.

2. In this case, after using Mapsource to send the maps to the GPS,
will I be able to unlock them on the Nuvi online?

3. I understand that the map data can be installed just on a single
computer. Is this correct?

Thank you

Carlos

p.s. already tried to contact Garmin support but got some server erros

I would want to know it myself, but I don't have what you have to try it
myself. So I will try to give you the instruction for you to try, then
PLEASE report the result here.

IOW, if you want to know if MapSource can read and transfer the downloaded
map to your unit or not then.

1. Run MapSource

2. Ctrl-U to see the list of installed Map data

3. Chose the downloaded MAP

4. Use Map Tool to select part or the whole map

5. Then close option to transfer the selected to UNIT

If you have memory card you can give it a try, or that would give you some
idea what's going on at your end. Then give us the answer.

I can easily select and transfer the maps to a GPS or to a card using
Mapsource. Everything seems the same as a "classic" update when maps came on
a DVD.
My problem is with the unlocking, that in the case of Garmin is not always a
straightforward process.

I just don't feel like erasing the fully unlocked up-to-date maps in the GPS
to try to send them again, with the posibility of not be able to unlock them
again. :-)

Back up the maps on the GPS to your computer first. Then you can try and
download from MapSource. The file you will want to backup is the
gmapprom.img one. Found in the Garmin folder on your Nüvi.

Me? the more I read about Garmin and the MapSource the more I distrust
Garmin. Lets me tell you some personal experience

1. With some version of MapSource and Map Data, I was able to select the
BLOCK to upload to GPS. I started with older model of StreetPilot with only
156MB memory so I had to replace the map when traveled to different state's.

2. Once, I reinstalled Windows and MapSource etc.. and forgot the password
to unlock my old City Navigator (I think it was v4.x). But I was able to
select and transfered the selected blocks to GPS. And later found out that
it won't work because the map wasn't unlocked.

So, it's exactly same with your statement above.

3. Then at once time, I don't remember the MapSource version and City
Navigator version (much newer). It won't allow me to select the *locked*
(not yet unlocked) map.

I got burnt so many times with newer version of MapSource so I just can't
trust Garmin with MapSource, Serveral times it didn't recognize all
installed Map Data and I had to reinstalled them again. Once, it recognize
some but not all, and older MapSource version had no problem recognizing the
old map.

So, sometime it's very hard to be able to give someone else the correct
answer. And thanks for your information.
