No more free update?

I bought a Nuvi650 in Nov. 07 that came with NA City Nav NT 2008. I
checked Garmin website with my unit serial # for 2009 update and it
wants $69.99. I thought if there is an update within a year from date
of purchase, you get a free update, no?

For as long as I can recall, Garmin has always had a Free Upgrade Policy if
your Unit was less then a month old (Registered) from Release the Map
Update. You of course are way past that. Still $70 now for Updates are
far better then it was years ago at $150 for a update. Though it included 2
licenses, I only ever used one anyway so the second was a waste. To me the
newer lower cost way is much better.

I am kind of Glad I had a defective Nuvi 780 That I registered at the end of
February, because I would have been paying for the update, but since I had
to send it in to get a replacement, and they screwed up and sent me a 770,
so I had to send that back again and wait even longer to get the 780, I
didn't get the replacement registered until after April, which did qualify
for the free update. Something GOOD did come out of the BAD for me.

It's never been a year. Because of the old high cost I didn't even upgrade
my Maps every year. I'd do Like I do with Quicken and other types of
software and go every other year. The old $150 upgrade price isn't so bad
as it's like $75 per year if you look at it that way. In any case it's No
free update for you.

        Yes, I believe Garmin still offer free update *but* they won't give out
newer version for free. I have never cared for the free update to know
exactly how many day (30 days, 60 days or 90 days?) you buy before the newer
version releases to get free update.

        And if you bought yours on Nov. 07 then the chance is NO. *But* if you
haven't registered yours then you can just register and should get your free
update (I am pretty sure).

Too bad. I registered right away in order to get a DVD that was not
included with the unit.
