I received a reply from a Garmin rep who asked not to be
directly quoted that Nav V8.0 should be out in a couple of
weeks. He obviously advised me that I may want to hold off
purchasing V7 for a little bit. ;-)

That means they will announce it in a couple weeks and it will be available
in a couple months, right? So if you upgrade to V7 after V8 is announced,
you will get a free upgrade to V8 when it actually ships as has been
standard practice for earlier releases?

Likely they will post a specific date at the website re "free
upgrade" at the time it becomes available. Upgrading to V7 after
that is safe; before that it will be a bit of a crapshoot.

Here is the actual text that I got from Garmin Support (name
withheld)

Steve,
Let me put it to you this way. If you were to buy v7 today,
but the v8 is released in July, you would have to purchase
that upgrade too. I really think that v8 will be released
here in June, so my advice is to wait a week or two and then
just purchase v8.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Thank You,
