Nuvi 265T - map update page:
The download is installed directly to your device or microSD/SD card and is
not accessible on the computer.
Use With 1 Device Only
This download may only be used on 1 compatible device. Data downloaded to a
microSD/SD card is associated with the device you select during the download
process. Please purchase additional quantities for additional devices.
File Information
The file size of this download and space required on device or microSD/SD
card is 1.1 GB. If this download does not fit on your device, data may be
saved on a microSD/SD card.
So I went to the Specs page to see " how much memory does it have:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=13427#specsTab
"Built-in memory info = internal solid state" Great.
"You MAY need to use a microSD card to download a new map."
Well, if I hook up the GPS to the pc and go to Garmin's website, why can't
they tell me DEFINITIVELY - you do NOT need a external memory card, or you
WILL need a card. Am I supposed to TRY to download it and after an hour of
downloading I'll be told " Sorry not enough memory ?" Give me a HINT at the
procedure. I don't own a microSd card otherwise, so IF I need one and if
one costs $50 ( just to do the upgrade), then I'll throw the whole thing
away and buy a new GPS rather than spend $99 for a map and $50 for a micro
card on a device that MAY fail on its own next week.

WAIT a second: on the link from the Overview Tab it tells me:
http://iqc.garmin.com/eCustomer/KODSelfService/request.do?create=kb:garmin&view%28%29=c
Pre-programmed datacards: Pre-programmed datacards are immediately ready to
use. Simply unpack the card and insert it into your compatible GPS device.
These maps do not need to be unlocked to your device which allows you to
move the card to multiple units if desired, however you will not have access
to the mapping on your computer. City Navigator maps in this format would
need to be purchased separately when a new version is released.
So if I buy it on a microSD card I can use it in any number of devices ? But
if I DOWNLOAD to MY MicroSD card then it only works on one device ? and if
that device dies I wasted my money ?
I'll keep my present map.

It means *if* you buy another Micro/SD card then you have a BACKUP of the
same one you use on current GPS device.
Buying addition means you have to buy different copy for different unit.
IOW, if you have TWO then you will have to buy TWO, if you have 20 then you
will have to buy 20. Then if you want to make 20 copies to make 40 then
it's up to you.

OK. So, if not enough internal memory, then I would need to buy/leave the
microSD card in the GPS to use the GPS from that point on ? And maybe it
'might not fit' because I have 10000 favorites with lots of related info
... that might make sense , but I'm not sure of what they're telling me. Can
you confirm - THAT's what they mean ? So if I wanted to buy a DVD or
download right to my GPS, how do I know if it will fit in advance? ( just
going by their language). Would it tell me immediately ? The FAQ section at
their site didn't help.
Thanks for any insight/ pointers.

I read few people reported about the size of internal memory is too small
for some model(s) and some map version is little too big for those specific
model causing some annoying problem.
- *IF* you have internal memory shortage issue then you can get around the
problem by removing the Pre-Loaded map to free up the memory. Then install
the Additional Map to external memory. This will only work *if* you have
the upgraded map (addional map)
I don't have much experience with the Pre-Loaded map (the map comes with
GPS).
- Just the MAP(s) alone there should be enough space (for both base map and
street detail map), but I read some reports saying some MAP version and
MODELs leave around 300-400K (or 300M?) and it could be problem for having
too many POIs.
- I do not know if you can just copy/move the Pre-Loaded map to external
memory or not, but it you can then it will use the internal memory for POIs
and few small things and it should have more than 1GB free. And you can TRY
THIS method see if it works.
- COPY the pre-loaded map to external memory.
- RENAME the GMAPPROM.IMG (I believe this is the Pre-Loaded MAP)
If the GPS still see the map then it means it can read the pre-loaded map
from external memory.
*IF* it doesn't see the pre-loaded map from external memory then you may
try this method
- MAKE a copy of the GMAPPROM.IMG and name it GMAPSUPP.IMG
- COPY the GMAPSUPP.IMG to garmin folder (this is the folder for
ADDITIONAL MAP) see if it works.
There is a chance that it won't work. And it it doesn't then you may call
Garmin to talk with them about the issue, and I am pretty sure (hopeful)
that they may give you the Addional Map that you can copy to external
memory.
ALSO, I read some solutions from Garmin techs saying that in order to free
up some internal memory (for extra POIs) you can DELETE the language(s) you
don't need.
Me? I think Garmin can be so cheap but spend extra few cents to increase
the internal meory to around 4-8GB.

The cost of 2GB microSD cards is trivial.
