You've seen them on ariplanes: a map with the airplane superimposed
as to the location of the flight.

I want to do something similar for a tourist ship, but use a printed
nautical chart, a GPS, and a HDTV, and (if necessary) a computer. I
can get the nautical chart into GIF, TIF, JPG, or PDF format. Anyone
know of software for this? Any other hardware required?

This is occasionally discussed in video newsgroups, such as
rec.video.desktop.

last Carnival cruise had it -
displayed on the in room TV channels... and around the ship's flat screens.

it also showed the ship track...
and would change the scale based upon how close we were to port.

Assuming they have map coverage of water, the Delorme PC GPS systems
do exactly what you want. just hook the computer you use to a large
screen TV if it has TV out, or if it has DVI out (or VGA) hook it to a
large computer monitor/large screen TV with DVI input.
