I have just purchased and am awaiting delivery on a new Garmin nuvi660. I
would like to try using it on my Harley touring bike and would guess that it
would work except it is not waterproof. If it won't work, has anyone any
suggestions as to a good motorcycle unit (and mount) that will work? I am
very new to this GPS thing and am a total novice to this experience. Any
help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I am using a GPSMap 60CSx with a suction windshield mount which works great
for me. Still can read and see it during driving and the mount withstands
all the "little vibrations" ! But I do have a safety string attached to the
GPS, just in case the mount comes off.

And I can take it off and carry it with me when hiking too......... Of
course, a GPS with voice commands would not work very well on a Harley !!
:)

Cheers,

JCE

Hi
I'm new to GPS's too (nuvi 260w), but would have thought the zumo types
would have been a better choice?

I looked at the ZUMO's, and I like the features on the NUVI 780 better and
the larger screen size. The only downside besides Waterproof which is
easily cured with a Aqua Box is it doesn't send anything by Bluetooth to
your Helmets Bluetooth headset. So no voice commands, or MP3 Music, ect.
I've e-mailed garmin about this and asked for them to Enable it to be done.
I'm sure there are people that may want to use a headset in the car also
because they may not be able to hear the NUVI in their car or the built in
Mic doesn't work good for them. So e-mail Garmin and ask to have Bluetooth
Headset support in the NUVI's also, not just in the ZUMO's!
I don't see why they can't do it, it's already being done. They should do
all that they can to keep their fans happy!

The Bluetooth Headset I got for my Helmet, I think I won't be totally
screwed as it has a built in FM tuner, I think I should be able to turn on
the FM transmitter in the Nuvi and have my FM tuner pick it up that way.
It wouldn't be as good or clear as the Bluetooth, but it's better then
nothing. I haven't tried it YET. I had problem with my 780 on day one, I
sent it to Garmin, to send me a new one, then ended up sending me a 770,
which I didn't want, so I had to send that one back, and I'm waiting to get
the 780 once again. What a hassle and long wait to actually use it this has
been.

Mine is mostly going to be used in my Truck as I drive that more then my
Harley, I don't care about the built in XM Radio on the ZUMO as I have it
already and am not going to pay for another subscription. I like the Size,
look, and features of the Nuvi 780 over that of the ZUMO. I'm hoping this
will be the week my 780 shows up!!!

The zumo 450 or 550 would have been a better choice. They come with a
good quality (RAM Mounts) motorcycle mount and also with the mapping for
a PC install so you can plan and uploads waypoints and routes.

If you're stuck with the 660, you can get a good mount for it from a RAM
Mounts dealer:

You would need a cradle (the 660 snaps into that) and then a mounting
base that meets your needs. You can see some of the bits and pieces here:

Navigation wise, the zumo models will do everything that the 660 will do
and more.
