Not sure where I spotted this (it was only in the last day or two), but
in case anyone is interested, this appears to work - and is cheaper
than City Navigator !
MetroWizzz

It lets you convert Metroguide into fully routable maps on any Garmin
device that can autoroute.
The program itself has a better explanation of how to do it than the
webpage, just in case anyone is sitting there scratching their heads,
this is roughly the process:
Connect the GPS to the computer
Run MetroWizzz
Configure a set of maps in Mapsource / Metroguide and save as .GDB
Within Mapsource, tell it to send to the GPS unit
MetroWizzz aborts the send once the index files are generated
Locate the .GDB file you created
Close Mapsource to make sure the GPS is only connected to one program
From the 3 options in MetroWizzz, send it to the GPS unit
Done !
I read the web and it seems pretty interesting. I might give it a try
sometime to see how it works, and hoping I won't forget.

That process has been around and known for a while. thy have just
automated it. The "secret" to it all is intercepting that index file
and using that sendmap20 freeware for the upload.
Here is one of the earlier treatises on doing it:

It doesn't work on Metroguide Australia though!.
Apparently, the routing index is already in the M/G application of some of
the products.
Loads of us tried to get routing from My Australia disk but it couldn't be
done.
That disk, was a bloody expensive waste of money.

Have you tried the method at this link?
http://garpatch.zexxo.net/anleitung_mg_aroute_eng.html
It relies on your watching for and copying the *.mdr temporary file
during the map file creation process. If worked for me with MG North
America V5.
