I am trying to understand what memory there is and how it is used in a
Garmin GPSMAP60CSx. version 4.00

1. Does the unit store things like tracks, routes, waypoints, etc. on
any internal memory?

2. Do items in 1. get stored on the expansion card?

3. If I need to manage space available for 2. what is the plan?

4. Can I still only put ONE map file onto a card (GARMIN folder)?

5. Is the limit of 2025 segmets still apply with the update that
breaks the 2GB limit, and what is the limit now? (I am assuming it is
now in the ...HC realm and is wide open).

6. What exactly is a segment and how do I know how many I am writing
to the card?

EXTRA POINT questions

7. I attempted to create a map file with Mapsource 6.15.6 to fill a
4GB card (about 3.9GB) but it stopped at 66% done saying my 6GB system
memory was not enough. How much system memory is needed per GB of map
file created?

8. When I try to write a 35MB map file to a 60CS I get the following
message
---------------------------
MapSource
---------------------------
Some devices were found; however, none have the necessary
capabilities.
Please make sure your device is connected to the computer and turned
on, then try again.
You may also need to set the interface option on your GPS to 'Garmin'
or 'Host'.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

The GPS is connected and is in GARMIN mode.

9. How does one delete map files from a 60CS without loading another
map to it? Set it back to factory default base map only.

thx

The unit has two sorts of memory. It has internal memory connected to
themotherboard, and it has a little card inside next to the battery.

All the things you mentioned are stored on the internal memory, unless
you tell it to write track information onto the card. Use the answer
toquestion 3 to take a look at the card and see what you can find on
it.

Take the card out and connect it to your computer. Or connect the
unit to your computer in USB Mass Storage mode. Mess with the files
you seethere.

Yes. The unit will still also have whatever map information is in
itsinternal memory.

No idea.

Read the documentation for the software you're using to edit maps.

It's more complicated than that, and depends on how complicated your
mapis and what features it uses.

Consult wherever you got that map from. The GPSmap series doesn't
have all the capabilities that all Garmin units offer (no single unit
does).

See answer to step 3.

thanks Simon.
I did manage to confuse u though. Questions 8 & 9 are about a 60CS
NOT 60CSx so I can't use answer 3 for that.

I also forgot to mention that the map I am using is CNNANT2008
I don't have a problem loading Topo2008 maps onto the 60CS via the
same Mapsource program.
There isn't a problem loading the CNNANT2008 maps onto a card for the
60CSx

Same thing with no removable card. Same answer to your question.

Since they are both Garmin products you can contact Garmin and ask
whether that map should work with that unit.

Yes.

No. That only data that will be written to the memory card by the GPS
receiver is the *.gpx files with track data. Those will not be there
unless you turn that setting on.

> 3. If I need to manage space available for 2. what is the plan?

If you want it to have space for *.gpx files with track data you need to
make sure there is some free space on the cards. The *.gpx files are
not very large, you can look at one for a full day with your preferred
settings for collecting track points to get a feel for how much space
you need to have free to handle the longest period of time you want to
let track data files accumulate. I usually have at least 20-50 MB or
more of free space and that would last for weeks.

> 4. Can I still only put ONE map file onto a card (GARMIN folder)?

MapSource writes map files to a file named gmapsupp.img in a \garmin
folder off of the root of the memory card. You cannot change that
behavior or the filename. So every time you send a map file to the GPS
it overwrites the existing file.

You can go to the Mass Storage Mode up put the memory card in another
device (a PDA, card reader on a PC, etc.) and change the name of the
\garmin folder to protect the gmapsupp.img file in that folder from
being overwritten. And, of course, the GPS receiver will no longer find
it and use it.

From that point on you can have any number of folders with gmapsupp.img
file as long as there is only one folder named \garmin. The GPS
receiver will use the \garmin folder and the gmapsupp.img file in it as
long as it is compatible mapping and unlocked to the receiver.

Last I heard the 2025 limit was still in effect.

A segment is one map (also called a map segment) as it is selected in
MapSource with the Select tool. You see the total number of map
segments selected (and some other stats) at the bottom of the user data
tabs.

How many map segments were you trying to include in the file. That
sounds like the kind of error you'll get when you have selected more
than 2025 segments. Sometimes, when you have too many segments, it will
give the impression that the file was successfully created but it may
not work when you try it. Or if it does work, it will not contain all
the track segments that you have selected.

To see how many segments are in a map file on a card, you can choose to
download the maps from the receiver. That will not actually download
the maps to MapSource but it will download a list of the maps that are
in the gmapsupp.img file and then you can look at the stats in MapSource
to see what was in the file.

Are there any drives available? If not, try the Find Device button.
Then make a manual selection in the Transfer dialog box? If you know
the letter (D:, E:, F:, etc.) assigned to your GPS receiver's memory
card, that is the drive you want to select.

MapSource will normally find any and all memory cards in the GPS
receiver and also any that are on the PC. And it will also try to work
with some other applications like the Palm device's Desktop or
ActiveSync or whatever that is called. You might try reinstalling or
updating your USB drivers.

Is it in the Mass Storage Mode or in the GPS receiver mode?

Put the memory card in a reader or PDA and delete the \garmin folder
from the memory card. Or just rename the \garmin folder and the GPS
will not find the maps.
