Hello......
As stated in a previous thread ("Difference between GPSMAP 76csx and GPSMAP
96s")
I have acquired a 76csx with a 2GB SD micro card and am looking for mapping
software.
Jack Erbes and JCE have been most helpful, but there is more I would like to
know.

I am currently running MetroGuide v.7 with the associated Mapsource PC
software.
I use it for my 76s which only has 24MB internal memory--works fine
I am looking at CNNA NT 2010 but wish to keep the 76s
My understanding is that CNNA will overwrite my existing Mapsource software.

If I were not keeping the 76s, that would not be a problem, as I found
Mapsource MG v.7 to be awkward to use, and I am told the new software is
more intuitive.
However, the following questions arise.

1) Obviously I cannot load 1.7GB of CNNA data to a 24MB unit, but could I
still use its PC software to create routes for the 76s?
(situation: what about roads that did not exist when MG v. 7 came out?
stuff like that)
2) Assuming "no" to the above question, how would I protect MG v.7 from
being overwritten on my PC?
Create a new folder for it and run it as a totally separate entity? How
would the registry respond to that?
Or will CNNA allow me to choose a location for the program to
reside--solving the problem in that way?

Thanks in advance!

Apparently you've never updated MapSource, which is the map utility program.
Installing CNNA will update MapSource to whatever version is on the DVDROM.

City Navigator is a map product. You can have more than one map product
installed. I have Metroguide Version 4 and version 6 installed along with
Topo USA, a third party, and some of my own. I don't know about the very
latest version of MapSource, but the one I have only allows 10 map
products in the drop down menu.

In other words, you can have both Metroguide version 7 and City Navigator
version 2010 installed. MapSource remains MapSource but the newer version
will have some changes that you may or may not like.

changes like what? My main beef with MapSource v.7 is its non-intuitiveness
and inflexibility in modifying routes.
for example: to get to a point in a city block on a diagonal as the crow
flies, I might route 1 block north then 1 block east.
If I change my mind and want to go east, then north, it is very awkward with
v.7.
Why not (and I am making this up) say be able to hold down the CTRL key and
click on 2 route sections. They highlight. Then right click, and one of
the options is "delete route segment."?

The MapSource version is not the same as the map product version. I
don't remember about where MapSource was when MetroGuide version 7
came out.

The oldest version of MapSource I have running is 6.12.3, which
should be much newer than the version that came with MetroGuide 7.
The current MapSource version is 6.15.6.

You can select a route, click on it with the pointer tool, which
should give you a modified pointer symbol with a "+" and route
tool indication and a couple of straight lines. You can then
drag that spot on the route to a new location. MapSource will
then recalculate the route through the new point, which Garmin
considers a "via" point. "Via" points may not get sent to all
receiver models; however, for those it does, the receiver will (or might)
route you through that point. For some receivers, you might have
to resort to waypoints instead of via points. I have little
experience with road navigation so I'm not going to try to cover
all the problems I've read about.

The latest version of MapSource and list of changes from
one version to another is at:
