I would like to plan waypoints and routes in MapTech's Chart Navigator
software and then transfer the data to Garmin's MapSource software.
The MapSource software will write the data to my USB data card that I
can then use to transfer the data to my GPSMAP 492.
Does anyone know of a way to accomplish this task?
Chart Navigator will not output the Garmin format for direct import
into MapSource.
The only reason to use MapSource is that it will easily write the
waypoints and route data to my USB programmer and data card and that
data card is easily read by the GPSMAP 492.
I have looked for a data conversion utility, but have not found one
that I can get to work. I have tried EasyGPS and GPSU. Maybe I am
doing something wrong.
Advice?
TIA, Rich

GPSBabel will convert Maptech Exchange Format to Garmin .gdb files. It is

Did you know that Chart Navigator and Chart Navigator Pro are licensed
versions of Rosepoint Software's Coastal Explorer software? You can
download the trial version of Coastal Explorer from the link here:
http://www.rosepointnav.com/CoastalExplorer/default.htm
The CE trial version has some limitations (the GPS times out so you
can't use it for navigation) but it it otherwise fully functional and
will let you download and use all the free NOAA vector and raster charts
and you can plan and export routes too.
One of the export formats from CE is to a *.gpx file. MapSource will
open *.gpx files. The process might need to be watch closely, at least
at first, as there appears to be some potential for misinterpretations
or misusing of data in the process and you routes might not move back
and forth without error.
CE will also save navigation objects to Maptech *.mxf and *rxf files
(those are waypoints and routes respectively) so if the *.gpx file does
not work, you can also try using the other MapTech file formats.

No, but *.gpx will work (may work?) both ways.

I had good luck getting routes and waypoints into Coastal Explorer by
downloading that data from my 76Cx in MapSource, saving it as a *.gpx
file, and then importing the *.gpx file into Coastal Explorer.

I use GPS Utility too. It will also read from and write to all the
formats mentioned above (*.dxf, *.gdb, *.mxf, *.rxf) but I did not have
to use it as an intermediate software for getting routes and waypoints
from MapSource to Coastal Explorer as long as I saved them in *.gpx
format from from MapSource.
I do use GPSU for looking and editing tracks that were downloaded to
MapSource because it is much more capable for editing tracks than is the
Garmin software.

Give it another try?
