I am a longtime Garmin user.  My first devise was a StreetPilot 2610
and, when I installed the maps, came with the MapSource application.
MapSource is used to read maps, make waypoints, etc. I purchased
subsequent City Navigator maps updates several times over the years
which may have included MapSource updates.  Last year I purchased a Nuvi
1490LMT.  The MapSource on my machine was able to access the most recent
maps (City Navigator NT 2012.3) downloaded by the LMT updates.

My hard drive failed recently, was replaced, and required that I
reinstall most applications including the Garmin Lifetime Update stuff.
The Garmin software (LMT stuff) now seems to install BaseCamp, rather
than MapSource, as the application to read maps, make waypoints, etc.
BaseCamp is different, and I think less functional, than MapSource.

I did try to reinstall the software that came with the 2610 in an effort
to recover MapSource.  But this software is approx 8 years old and is
looking of license/registration information that is now obsolete.  Is
there a way to recover MapSource without jumping through hoops?
