I have a 76CSx and City Navigator NA 2009. I usually use MapSource on my PC
to generate waypoints and routes which I upload to the receiver and later
download track info if I'm interested.

If I buy a Nuvi or some other GPSR with pre-loaded maps, will Garmin supply
a DVD of the maps to install on my PC for use with MapSource? Will I be
able to upload routes and download tracks as I do with my handheld?

More than likely, the maps on the Nuvi will not be the latest. When you
register the Nuvi on the Garmin web site you will be given the option to
download the latest maps. I think the "Advanced" option gives you the
opportunity to download the maps to the unit and the PC.

It does. Last year when we got our Nuvi and registered it, the site
gave the option to download the latest City Navigator. It updated the
Nuvi and Mapsource.

You can't upload routes - the car GPS's really don't use them. You can
upload waypoints. You can download waypoints and tracks to Mapsource.

Mapsource is handy when planning routes. We regularly use it to bypass
large cities and such. It then becomes a matter of downloading the new
"bypass" waypoints, then adding them in as a "Via" on the Nuvi.

I think it depends what model of Nuvi you are using. With the 765 you can
download complete routes to the Nuvi as well as waypoints. The routes are
then installed in the "Custom Routes" section on the "Where To?" page.
There's no need to fiddle with individual waypoints.

Ok, how do you make a custom route?
