Here I am, several thousand miles from home, and I did some cleanup on
my laptop, deleting CNNA version 8, because I also have the 2009 version
on this computer.

Today I try to start MapSource, and it gives me an error: "There is a
problem with the City Navigator North America v8 installation. Please
re-install City Navigator North America v8 and start MapSource again."

I tried re-installing MapSource v61511, but after it successfully
installs, and tries to run, it produces the same error.

Does anyone know of a fix that doesn't involve going home first to get
my CNNA v8 disks?

Never mind, I fixed it!
Ran REGEDIT and deleted every reference to City Navigator North America v8.

Lesson: never clean up laptop when far from home!

Also, never tinker w/ registry settings unless you are confident that
you'll modify/delete the correct ones. Or at least back up the
registry before editing. Having one program misbehave is nothing
compared to having your whole system hosed.

MapSource can be very stupid sometime. And reinstalling the whole thing
may be the only solution.

- If you already have MapSource with you then I would suggest to *uninstall*
all CNs and MapSource then reinstall the whole thing.

- I am guessing MapSource acting up because it tries to look for CN v8 which
no longer available.

Here, I have run into sooooo many issues with MapSource (I have been using
Garmin over a decade) and still dunno what the heck it/they doing.

- Once awhile I have several copies of MapSource installed on different
locations/drives/folders, and not the folder I tell it to install to.

- Sometime different copy of MapSource loads/detects different Data Map's

- I had to reinstall both MapSource and Data Maps around dozen times because
some version of MapSource didn't like some older maps, or different problem.

I have a downloaded copy of the MapSource installer, but, as I said,
re-installing MapSource did not solve the problem. Furthermore, I could
not reinstall "the whole thing", because I don't have map disks with me.

True, dat! But it doesn't answer the question of how to uninstall a map
set, in this case v8, while still leaving other map sets available, in
my case v2009.

Learning how to cope with REGEDIT will get you out of many jams!
