I used a Garmin program called nRoute with my old Garmin GPS-V. Now I
have a Nuvi 850.... is there any comparable software that will work
with the USB connection on the Nuvi?

No, nRoute is different. Mapsource doesn't even require a GPS to be
attached, however it will enable you to download maps to the older
Garmin GPS units like the GPS-V. nRoute won't even install unless you
already have Mapsource... I suppose because it uses the Mapsource
Maps. nRoute is for autorouting (like the Nuvi's do without any
additional software or a computer). I'm interested in whether it's
possible to use the Nuvi with a computer.... much larger display and
so easier to read maps.

However, the link you gave for nRoute contains an intresting clue:
"May 2009-- Garmin tells us that nRoute has been replaced by Garmin
Mobile PC-- but that software requires a fee."

I'll do a search for "Garmin Mobile PC" and see what turns up.
