I just bought a Garmin Nuvi 1300 and updated the maps.
As an example, on a highway in a major metropolitan area, it lists a
cross street/exit as GA-72 instead of Johnson Street. Even though
it's officially both, it's not shown as GA-72 anywhere except in the
GPS. The exit sign doesn't say it, the street itself has no signs
stating it, and locals don't even know it also has a state route
number. And it's just a little street, not a highway.
The GPS should show it as Johnson Street.
Is this a known issue with Garmin GPSs and the company from which they
purchase their maps?

I can't predict how anyone else will answer your question, but I've
seen what you describe multiple times.
Local example: there's a stretch of US Highway 50 here that shares the
same asphalt as Interstate 35. Everyone knows the road as I-35, but on
that stretch of road the GPS (Nuvi 760, in my case) insists on calling
it US 50. Annoying.

This type of error should be reported, IMNSHO. Or you should bear it and
grin.
What is Rt 128 aka I95 around Boston called nowadays? I lived near there
from '69 till '76, and still visit more or less regularly, so I don't use
a GPS to get around ...

I bear it. Next time it happens I'll try to check if I have a grin. :)

The Jack voice on mine says "route four zero zero" rather than "route
four hundred" and the male Australian voice on my last Garmin said
"Interstate two hundred and eighty five"

Hi Han - (in this forum!).
Rt 128 (State highway name) aka I95 (Interstate Highway name when they
couldn't reem I95 through Boston in the 1970s and had to abandon that
project that connected it coming from the South and going relatively north
to where is comes out on the other side of 128 and they had to use I-95 for
that name instead) is known as 'Yankee Division Highway' to us Bostonian
natives. But NO ONE who is less than 50 years old would EVER know thats
it's REAL name (hey, you asked!). Sometimes on signs you'll also see it
listed as 'America's Technology Highway', but that's unofficial.

From the intersection of Route 1, Garmin (correctly) shows it to be Route
128 heading North towards Salem. Heading South from that point it is shown
as Route 95. The road signs show it to be both 95 and 128 when heading
South. The exit ramp signs can be confusing to someone unfamiliar with the
road as it uses Route 95 numbers heading South and 128 numbers heading North
(from Rt 1). A big step change in the ramp number when you make the
transition.

I'll pay more attention next time when I reach 128 from the Pike, and go
off at Rt 2

Not a problem that far south--the ramp number discontinuity happens in the
Peabody area

I've found the opposite. Roads that I've travelled for years suddenly
change. Rout 16 is Douglas Highway, Main St. etc. depending on the town you
are passing. When I was on Route 44 heading to route 101, I was lost for a
moment when the Garmin told me to turn onto Victory Highway. Plainly
marked with the route number, I found it confusing at first.

Is that the opposite? It sounds like pretty much the same to me. :)

To clarify:
He is saying the Garmin calls it route 72, not Johnson Street. I'm saying
it call it Johnson street instead of Route 72
The roads I referred to I've always known by the route number, but Garmin
uses the street name. That said, the 911 systems are now requiring street
names, not route numbers to avoid confusion for emergency response.

No problem. I thought we were loosely talking about Garmin calling
streets and roads by lesser known designators, but I see your point.

Living in the UK all the information tends to be street name. This is a
problem as road numbers are well displayed, but street name not.

Agreed. Normally I don't find the street name of any help at all when
driving. It's even worse if you drive in Europe where the names are mostly
mangled beyond recognition.
It's a pity there's no option to default to road numbers or names when
appropriate.
