I just bought the SP c330 unit and purchased the Map Update 2008 City
Navigator North America NT DVD disk

When I downloaded the disk to the unit, there was a warning that the
c330 had only limited memory and that I could choose to download the
48 US continuous states and Puerto Rico OR Canada and some US border
states.

The reason I bought the update was to have the maps of ALL OF NORTH
AMERICA on the unit. Now I am stuck with only partial maps of North
America. I would like to return to the original, pre-loaded maps that
came with the unit if I can. I will have to contact Garmin and find
out.

It seems pretty stupid on Garmin's part to have an update disk for all
of North America and when you download the disk, you have only partial
coverage.I have downloaded Canadian maps, but if I drive to the US,
then what??

Anyone else have a similar problem?

Get yourself a 1 gb SD card and using your map uploader, add the rest
of the maps to the SD card using a card reader.. Then insert in the
unit and restart, all of NA will be available to you. The c340 has
enough memory to hold all of NA, the c300 doesn't.

BTW, that up date disc is for all of Garmin products, not just the
C330.

Below is a copy of a previous post outlining the process of using a SD card
to load all of the maps. I have not personally tried it, but I held on to
this post just in case I decide to do so.

I posted the following on http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6240 last night,
after
an exhausting day of trial but surprisingly, no error!

c330 2008 map update
I have just finished installing ALL of the Map Update 2008 City Navigator
North
America NT on my Garmin C330. Once I got my head around what was actually
happening, I'd like to outline the procedure.

The 2008 CD installs a program called "MapInstall" on your computer to be
used
later. Don't forget.

-Your are asked to select between Canada (incl. Alaska & northern border
states)
OR lower 49 states (incl. Puerto Rico), which replaces the map info in the
C330.

-Now then, I have tried BOTH, but which one you load depends on what size of
SD
card you have, or want to buy. I can tell you that if you load the US/Puerto
Rico map, you can put ALL of Canada on a 512 mb SD card. If you load
Canada/Alaska, you can get away with a 1-gig SD card, but I had a 2-gig.

-At any rate, after loading your map, you will go to the program
"MapInstall".
Do NOT put the SD card in your GPS, but make sure it's on & the USB cable
attached. I have a Lexar USB SD card reader. When you start MapInstall, you
will
see both devices. Select the "Removable disk". You then have to select each
state or province individually to 'create' your 'secondary' map. It's easier
to
zoom in a bit on the North American map. When your selection is done, you
send
the info to the SD card in the USB reader. This takes some time, about 45
minutes to an hour.

When it's finished, remove the SD card from the reader & install it in the
slot
of the GPS. That's all there is. You do NOT have to select either map. You
end
up with a seamless North American/Puerto Rico map just like before. You'd
never
know that you had changed anything. All your previous waypoints etc are
there.

Like I said, I loaded Canada to the GPS, then the US to the SD card. I just
selected my friend's place in Lake Worth Florida as a destination. I touched
"Show Map" before Go! and voila, there it was, 2485.1 km away. I then
removed
the SD card and the mapping goes away. Stick it in & you're back in
business. I
don't know why I'd want to take it out from now on. I download the Florida
waypoint from MapSource, so your POi's must be on the GPS proper.

Since I only have the Canadian map on the GPS itself, I've got room to store
more POi's than this website can provide!

I'm in a similar situation. Talk about getting a SURPRISE....I just
bought a C530 and thought I was being super smart buying the Map
Update 2008 as well.

Realizing that North America was already installed on my C530 I
thought that Update 2008 was simply just an update and adding
corrections as necessary.

I opened the program only to find I was told I didn't have sufficient
memory even though it was recommended by Garmin.

I thought "Oh heck" I'll simply update the lower 48 states and proceed
letting Canada remain as is.

Never in my wildest dreams did I guess that it would completely NUKE
the Canada that had came preloaded when I bought it.

Now I can only navigate in the good old U.S. of A.

I'm at a loss as to what to do next. There has been talk of loading
Canada on a SD and using the external slot on the unit but I haven't
got a clue as to how to do it. Any suggestions? I downloaded MapSource
from Garmin's website but it won't open for me....possibly because the
C530 isn't connected or the Update 2008 CD isn't in the CD-ROM drive?

I'm not a computer guru and will need someone to lead me by the hand.
I will have to buy aa SD card but what type and also a CD card reader
that I can plug it into?

I'm going to attempt to load what I am now missing onto a SD and
please correct me if I am wrong or offer advice.

[A]. The Map Update 2008 that I bought says "This Udate DVD supports
updating one Garmin unit."

As I have already loaded the lower 48 states into internal memory can
I assume that if I now choose to load Canada, border states, etc into
internal memory it's two strikes and your out? Obviously this move
will obilterate the lower 48 states. What I mean by this is that if I
then wanted to load the lower 48 states on the SD It may not be
allowed as the CD has been used as per "This Update.........Garmin
unit."?

[B]. Let's say I leave the 48 states in internal memory and not rock
the boat. I now want to load the Canada, etc. update onto a SD.
Brian's posting says:

< At any rate, after loading your map, you will go to the program
"MapInstall". >

How do you load the map? Do I put the Map Update 2008 CD back into my
CD-ROM drive with the C530 hooked up to the USB port? Just for
interest sake without the GPS attached I tried inserting the disc and
this is the message I eventually get:

1. Turn on your Garmin GPS.
2. Connect GPS to computer with USB cable.
3. If the "Found new hardware wizard" appears.......Windows will
complete the installation........click NEXT on this page to continue.

Brian then says:

< Do NOT put the SD card in your GPS, but make sure it's on & the USB
cable
attached. I have a Lexar USB SD card reader. When you start
MapInstall, you
will
see both devices. Select the "Removable disk". You then have to select
each
state or province individually to 'create' your 'secondary' map. It's
easier
to
zoom in a bit on the North American map. When your selection is done,
you
send
the info to the SD card in the USB reader. This takes some time, about
45
minutes to an hour. >

[C]. This is where the posting above gets foggy for me....I obviously
have some sort of map preloaded from somewhere that I can zoom in on?
Is the Map Update CD 2008 being used?

[D]. If I can get to this point in Brian's posting I will be more
than happy.....I would have no problem seeing the unit on my dash with
an SD card sticking out of the memory slot.

< When it's finished, remove the SD card from the reader & install it
in the
slot
of the GPS. That's all there is. You do NOT have to select either map.
You
end
up with a seamless North American/Puerto Rico map just like before.
You'd
never
know that you had changed anything. All your previous waypoints etc
are
there. >
