But I worry about a gotacha. In particular, is "lifetime" as long as the
device still works or is it determined by Garmin who might say that the life
expires when they are no longer selling the model I own?

The 2720 and, I think, the 76Cx and the 7200 have all been discontinued, but
my lifetime updates are still in force. I suspect that the "lifetime"
probably won't change until the move from the "NT" compression format to
something else.

Generally, it means the lifetime of the product line. Support will exist
for everything that is currently manufactured or is convenient to still
manage. A typical support window will be something like two years, after
which that "convenient" modifier takes over strongly.

I have a StreetPilot c340 which I bought four years ago and which has
not been manufactured for at least three years. In June, 2009 I
bought the lifetime support for $120. Garmin continues to supply map
updates and I loaded the most recent set of updates in April, 2010.
The liftetime support has been a good investment for me for this unit.

I'm rather hoping the lifetime is until Garmin supercedes the mapping
technology - for example, when they brought out the NT version of CN,
the old map format was not supported for long afterwards.

After all, as they don't transfer map licence unless you are doing a
repair trade in, the majority of users will purchase new maps & update
licences when they upgrade to a new model. If you sell your old GPS
the update subs are not transferable to a new owner.
