They finally got around to me with the offer for lifetime updates, up
to 4 per year. I remember back when I wasn't interested in this,
there were some posts concerning this offer.

It seems some people weren't happy with it.
I thought maybe I better check here before I spend that kind of money?

What are your comments on this.

The price that Garmin (and Tom Tom) charge for their map updates is
extortionate.

The database is already there, and only minor amendments are required during
the two years or so between updates.

The AA in the UK produce an updated paper map book every year and, although
it's RRP is around £6.99. These books are frequently on sale in motorway
service areas and book shops for as little as £1.99. There is no reason at
all why Garmin et al should charge the amount that they do for updates. It
is a complete rip off.

In view of the every increasing availability of free satnav with free
world-wide mapping, and free constant updates, on mobile phones, I strongly
suspect that Garmin etc will be forced to reduce their prices to compete -
or seriously begin to lose business.

I have just recently replaced both my mobile phone and my Nuvi with a Nokia
5800 for this very reason. I objected to being ripped off. Because of their
greed, Nuvi have lost a customer, lost the opportunity to sell me an
improved, more recent satnav unit, and lost the sale of updated maps to me.

If I was you I would wait- things are changing rapidly and you may find that
the major players in dedicated satnav will soon begin to offer free updates.

Ah yes, yet another socialist Brit heard from. It's Garmin's product,
their info, their pricing. You don't like it? Think it's too expensive?
Don't buy it!

No wonder the sun sets quickly on the British Enpire these days!

For a start I am as far from being a socialist as you can imagine - my
politics are more extreme right-wing.
Secondly, I did precisely as you suggest. My Nuvi 310 has been retired and I
am now using my Nokia with completely free satnav, free updates, and free
worldwide maps for when I travel.

I'm a bit puzzled as to how you can arrive at that conclusion from my
post...

May I ask how much extra you pay for your Nokia's data access?
Perhaps it adds up to more than the cost of Garmin map updates?
I think what sold me on Garmin was its large screen and many routing
options. I have a 5-inch 1490T. Also you won't miss a turn by an
incoming phone call.
Garmin sells lifetime updates for $99 but you can find it on ebay for
less.
