Right outside my house and also about 20 miles away, my nuvi seems to
need about five minutes to acquire satellites, even if the unit is in
the same location it was when it was last used and then turned off.

Is this normal? I just got a specialized GPS for my D SLR
(dawntech.hk) which seems to acquire satellites in under 30 seconds.

Fortunately the lat/long location data is the same for both my Garmin
and the dawntech. :)

How long was it off? It may have stayed in the same location, but the
satellites move and must be re-acquired. How long that takes depends on
several variables.

I enjoyed the part about the satellites moving. Boy, wouldn't that be
something if the satellites moved!? ;-)

That's what satellites do. There are geostationary satellites, but
those are not used for gps.

Or at least only for secondary purposes, not the main signal.

Mike.
