Was driving in the southeast US (middle Georgia) around 1400 ET this
afternoon with 4-5 bar signal strength and a clear view of the sky My
nuvi 255W showed the driving direction and general location-- but put my
position about a mile south of where I actually was. This happened for
about 15 minutes despite turning the unit off and on several times.
Then it went back to being accurate-- and it's OK now.
Explanations?

Go to the group sci.geo.satellite-nav and find Sam Wormley's posts a couple
of days ago concerning reconfiguring the satellite orbits and testing. Your
situation might possibly be caused by some of that.

There are often NOTAMs warning of military GPS jamming trials,
perhaps you wandered through one of those.
I'm not sure how jamming would affect reported signal strength.
