Import .csv or .ptm files with tracks to a Garmin 296. Can it be done?

Hi, can anyone help?

I need to import a csv file full of tracks downloaded from a 296. I also
have them in .ptm format (not sure what that is....?) and possibly in .txt
format.

What facility can I use to upload these into a GPS (garmin 296?) and what is
the process?

any help appreciated

Wyatt

The *.ptm file is a MapPoint file, the *.csv is comma separated values
of course. GPS utility will import the *.ptm and then upload it to the
296 if you can connect to it via a serial or USB connection. I think
GPSU will read the *.csv file as a text file and do the same with that.

That is shareware and very good. If you expect to do things like that
very often and/or to and from different GPS receivers, it is a very good
thing to have. The trial or freeware version may work for you to try it
out:

There are a number of freewares and sharewares here that are worth trying:

The process is basically that you get would connect the 296 to your PC
using either the optional serial cable or a USB cable (install the down
loadable Garmin USB drivers first) and GPSU or other utility will
connect to it.

A more advanced utility (like GPSU) will let you see the waypoints and
routes listed in tabular data formats, edit all data, and see the
waypoints and routes plotted on blank map or even over a map image it
you have one of a compatible type.

Jack,

Thank you very much for that reply. I down loaded the program and it is
very useful. there a few issues with not recognising icons, and only able
to import/export a limited number of points if you don't pay the license,
etc.

The problem I have now is that when I upload to the GPS, everything is shown
as modified on today's date and therefore loses the date it was actually
created etc. I have looked at the data fields, etc in the GPSU program and
I cannot see any way of adding the 'date modified' field to be either
downloaded or uploaded. Therefore everything loaded into the GPS will have
the date you loaded it and not the original date (or date it was actually
last modified). Is there any way the upload can take the date modified
field with it? Otherwise can that field be modified in the GPS unit?

Again, thank you for your assistance.
