I recently dropped my eTrex Vista HCx, and it no longer functions reliably.
I want to be able to use its replacement for both hiking and driving. I
would really like a larger screen.
The ease of setting things up using MapSource on my PC and transferring
the results (waypoints -- addresses) to the unit is important. Voice
directions while driving would be only a small plus.
All the Garmin units I am aware of with larger screens seem designed
strictly for driving. None seem capable of using topo maps for hiking
and keeping tracks of my travels.
I also like being able to check on location while on a cruise.
Are any of the big-screen Garmins capable of meeting my needs?
TIA for any advice you can give,
Gerry

You can read about the new Garmin nuvi 3700 series -- They say it has
a 4 hour batter life, but I wonder

I don't think any of the Nuvi units have the battery life over four hours -
not much of a hike. The Nuvi 500 and 550 are the only waterproof Nuvi
models from Garmin. I think the Oregon series may be more to your liking.
Better battery life - and replaceable AA batteries to boot.

I looked for something like you would like and could not find one, so
I bought a GPS Map 60CSx. Yeah, I would still like a bigger screen
for driving, but otherwise it is a great unit.

Thanks much for the suggestion.
I got an Oregon 550 and am very happy with it.
Getting City Navigator installed in the PC and unlocked and into the GPS
was a comedy of errors, and multiple times I thought I was going to need
help from Garmin tech support. But I got everything going on my own, and
it probably took under an hour, so it really wasn't that bad--just kinda
scary to be at that stage the evening before leaving on a trip.
Thanks again,
Gerry
