What logically seems to be the minimum interval between "updating" and
purchasing new maps? Somehow, my simple-minded view is once a year for
updating and this obviates the need for new maps. Is this stupid?

um, updating and purchasing new maps is the same thing. Not quite sure
what you're asking.
You can purchase the ability to update at will, as Garmin provides
updates, for as long as you own the unit; that one time purchase is
retail $120.
Or, you can buy map updates individually as they come out.
Both mechanisms provide map updates.

So long as your "at will" is no more than four times a year, according

Plainly, your "at will" is dependent upon the map supplier. That's with
any product. Even the realtime maps available on your smartphone are
only as up to date as the supplier deems necessary.

Updating the GPS receiver software is not the same thing as purchasing
maps. I see no need to purchase maps even once a year. The road system
changes very little from year to year. Most of the road changes are
improvements, such as new lanes or interchanges.
