Hi
How can I find the size of my equipped internal memory
inside my Zumo 550 bike Garmin unit?
Is the size of the cards given and can I add the size of the
cards to be downloaded simply together to see if my memory is
enough to load an additional card into my Zumo device?
If the internal memory is full, can I equipp more internal memory
(like on a PC) to make it possible, to load another map on the internal
memory of my Zumo 550 device?
I do not mean the SD card option. I d not want to unse the SD Option
My question is related to the internal memory.
Regards

Depends on where you purchased it. Australian purchased ones have only
500Mb, most others have twice this amount. Not upgradeable by users.
To find out what yours has, connect it to a computer, you'll show
either one or two new drives (depends upon if you have an SD card
installed. On my computer, Garmin internal memory comes up as Drive D:
and SD card comes up as Drive E: (ie they show up as next available
drive letters). Using My Computer (if using Windows) right click on
the first new drive, then select Properties.

Thanx Caren for this easy instructuion.
So I removed the SD-Card and I got one additional drive called
GARMIN_INT (G:) and this drive has 1,94 GB.(2GB)
I can also see, that this drive is nearly full.
1,71GB used 237MB free. That means to me, I am not able to load
another map additional in my internal memory, without erasing
(damadgeing)the default Europe NT map.
So If I want to load another map like North America into
my *internal* Memory of my device, I must before save my default
card (e.g. with mapsource??) to my PC, load the North America map
in the internal Memory (from SD card?? or from garmin download)
and reload the Europe NT card from my PC if vacation is over and
I am back in Europe.
Do you agree?
Remember I speak only about the internmal memory.
I do not want to use the SD-card slot for maps.

I normally use two maps with my Zumo 550 - City Navigator Australia &
New Zealand, plus Topo Plus Australia.
I also have CN Europe, but for obvious reasons I don't need all these
on the Zumo at the same time.
So, I have Garmin's CN Australia on internal memory, and Topo Plus on
the SD card. I have a second SD card with CN Europe on it, so I can
just swap the SD card to get the different zones.
I know that this solution does not fall within your requirements, but
it does save me re-building the map files each time I wish to swap.
And SD cards are dirt cheap these days.
There are further restraints on the system as to how many map segments
you can have loaded at one time, this is a viable work-around for that
issue too.
I don't use MP3 files on my Zumo, as it's not a stereo device - I use
an iPod attached to my Scala G4 headset. This silences the iPod input
if the GPS or my phone needs to talk to me.

Since not everyone owns the Zumo 550, so I would say it would be faster if
you just Google for the answer yourself instead of waiting for someone to
Google for the answer to pass to you. But in general, most newer Garmin
GPSes have between 1.6 - 2GB of internal memory which is enough to hole a
whole map.

I can't get a clear picture of your answer. So I just give some general
answer instead.
1. The *internal* memory would be large enough to hole a complete MAP (like
City Navigator North America for example). But not the TOPO map which is
much larger than the internal can hold, and more BLOCK than the limitation.
2. Memory is pretty much the STORAGE, and external memory means another
STORAGE and they don't talk to each other.

GPS can be consider a specific computer, but not like regular computer.
And even if it works similar to regular computer, you can't turn a storage
(hard drive or removable storage like memory card) into memory. Regular
computer can turn storage into SWAPPING device/unit, but since GPS has
nothing to swap so it won't do swapping either.

Oh.. you mean adding more internal memory. Of course it's possible *if*
Garmin design accept more than 2GB internal memory, and you have the larger
memory to replace whatever it's now. And of course with some handy skill to
open the case, electronics skill to replace the memory card, and hacking
skill for modification (hacking).
