Just curious ...
Can someone tell me : who inputs the data I see on GPS?
When I check " Food" for example , is the McDonalds paying to advertise on
my Garmin ? So if they don't pay they don't appear ?
reason I ask: I like Panera Bread and many do not show up during my search.
Recently driving thru Jacksonville and it was time for lunch. Did a search
for food and - no Panera listed. Went to a Cracker Barrel near hwy and after
getting back onto 95 I saw a sign for International airport and I remembered
a few years ago I avoided a traffic mess at that stop and - from the Panera
I ate at I could see the very sign I was now seeing. I turned to my right
and thru the trees - there was the Panera ! I checked again - only .1 miles
away and not listed.
SO, is it Panera not providing Garmin with the info ?
Or they chose to not advertise ?
Or Garmin only updates every ... 12 months ? etc

There's directories of businesses that sell lists of businesses for
various purposes. (I've worked with both InfoUSA and Dun & Bradstreet
data like this for various projects.) Garmin buys a list of businesses
in a particular line of business, usually by Standard Industrial
Classification (SIC) codes. Franchise locations like Panera getting
onto those lists in a timely manner usually depend on the parent HQ
cooperating with the list vendors to get information to the list vendors
quickly and accurately. Some chains cooperate better than others.
The lists are used not only for location data like this, but also for
marketing efforts, so cooperating cuts both ways: more and better
listings of your locations, and they get more junkmail and phone calls.

I would think commercial establishments pay to have their name come
up, say on a search for food,,

Just like a search on Gogle, the first one.

Poorly.
Dunkin Donuts for example has a deal with Tom-tom.
You can only find a cup of joe if you use their brand.
Not very smart marketing on DD's part.
