Since you ask about other mapping solutions, I'll mention that
OpenStreetMap is based on end-user input.
As I've done on occasions, just change a section of road to
"highway=construction", and routing software (including Garmin
firmware) ignores it for all users who have the updated maps. In
the same way, a temporarily-built detour track can be
easily added and removed when required.

There is a simple way to make it work. Since you know about the section of
highway, my guess is, you already know how to get to it and start the
detour. When you get to the detour part, you push the GO button to your
destination. About 99% of the time, when I leave my house with the
intention of using the GPS, I don't start it to my destination until I get
to the points I'm not sure of. I have my preferred routs to get to
Providence, Hartford, NYC, etc and don't bother with the GPS until I'm
getting closer to the final destination.

Very interesting. Is there a way to use OpenStreetMap on a Garmin unit?

Absolutely:

You'll likely want the routable versions. These are the ones
which support turn-by-turn instructions to get to a
destination.

Thanks, John. This is a major find!
