In Los Angeles, the section of HWY 405 from Santa Monica to HWY 101 is
closed for major improvement. How do you program a Garmin to avoid
only this section of the freeway and use surface street detour
instead? I know you can manually edit via points every time but is
there a easier way to do this? What about other mapping solutions
like Google Maps, Ovi Maps, TomTom, etc.? Or I guess you could rely
on traffic data to re-route you on the fly. Any thoughts?

If you have a unit that works with MapSource:
Edit->Preferences->Routing->Advanced

Then create the sections of routes to avoid and resync the Garmin with
MapSource.

If you have a model that doesn't use MS then I haven't a clue. I've done
it with my 76CSx just to putz around with it but I generally just use
the reroute feature.

With you on that one, Steve,
On those occasions I recall how life was before machines made all the
decisions for us.
I just follow the detour signs, and when the detour end is approaching, let
my CSx re-route.
And, like yourself, in a situation when I just plain know in advance that
whatever auto route is chosen will not be the best, I plan ahead with
Mapsource.

On that note, an interesting story similar to Figaro's, I created a route
to an airport 100 miles away using many rural roads because I know they are
faster in my parts. Got to a certain point and the 76 said "off route --
recalculate?" Sighing, since I knew it was wrong, I pressed yes every time
it annoyed me.

Found out later that I had set up Mapsource to avoid dirt roads. Problem
is--was NOT a dirt road--hasn't been for 7 years at least.
Mapsource NT 2010.4 says it IS a dirt road!

Don't blame it on MapSource, the problem lies with the data submitted by the
local public works agencies that are responsible for it.

We have a short road segment here that appears as a programmed turnoff to
another adjoining city after exiting a major Interstate highway. It appears
in both TomTom and Garmin's mapsets as "Take the next right to [...] Way"
even though the road hasn't existed for over 20+ years. It's now a steep
embankment festooned with dense vegetation, but protected with a modern
metal guardrail from above and a concrete curb from below.

Because it's impossible to make the turn, "Recalculating ..." occurs, and
then the proper direction is issued soon afterwards.

The short connective segment bears a highly-honoured deceased mayor's name,
so the local authorities apparently refuse to submit the changed datum so
that they can have a perpetual "Memorial.Surface" for the ex-mayor when
anybody new drives into town from that direction.

The humour of it has worn off for many of us locals though. That mayor was
busted in the '80s for DUI and resisting arrest because he insisted "Leave
the locals alone or I'll have your job! I'm the Mayor here ... you work for
ME!"

The Public Works Dep't. apparently thinks he got a "bum rap", but I
personally don't feel that that excuses their unwilingness to submit the
changed datum.

Wasn't blaming Mapsource at all
Just pointing out the GIGO factor
