Help with transferring maps to garmin

I'm trying to transfer maps to my garmin etrex vista C.
I'm transferring from the Garmin City Navigator CD, using Mapsource.
However, whenever I transfer the maps to the unit, it forces my etrex
into DEMO MODE and I can't get it back to normal mode unless I enter
test mode and then erase all the maps from the device.

Yep, I unlocked them. When I start the transfer, Mapsource warns me:
"Are you sure you want to transfer the data while in Demo-Only mode?
Of course, I have no way of changing out of that mode while in
Mapsource, and my handheld is in normal mode.

It is clearly indicated you can activate/deactivate the demo mode from
the GPS item of the System page in your GPS setup screens. The manual
have an entry for 'demo mode' in the index if yours is different.

You probably want to put it in the 'Normal' mode and then, you should
be able to upload maps into it.

That's the frustrating thing. I did de-activate demo mode while on the
GPS unit, before transferring the maps. Here's what I did:
1. Make sure the unit (it's a vista-C, but works the same as the
Vista) is in normal mode.
2. start up the mapsource program; select the map; make sure it's
unlocked.
3. Transfer the maps to the etrex vista. A warning box pops up saying
"Are you sure you want to transfer the data while in Demo-Only mode?"
If I click on no, the transfer stops, and I'm back to square one. If I
click yes, It transfers the map, but then the Vista is stuck in demo
mode! And when I manually change the Vista back to normal mode, it
immediately switches back to demo mode. I have to delete the map from
the Vista (I enter into the test mode [by pressing the toggle switch
down and powering up device] and then I use sendmap20 to erase all the
maps from the device). Then I can switch to normal mode, and it
"takes".
One other thing: when I transfer waypoints or routes back and forth, I
get the same warning pop-up box ("Are you sure you want to transfer the
data while in Demo-Only mode?"). However, when I proceed with those
transfers, it DOESN'T switch the unit to Demo mode!

By the way, when I try to use sendmap20 (from cgpsmapper.com) to upload
the maps to the unit, plugging in the unlock code, the unit says "can't
unlock maps."

I've made sure the software on both the unit and Mapsource are most
current versions.

I'm really at my wits end!
