ok, I should know this... but... mental blocks are a b*tc...

For the handhelds, say the 60 and 76 series how is the data handled on
the unit, I can't really recall and don't see it standing out in the
manual. Plus, with the maps actually running the experiments would take
a while...

Scenarios:

I have the following in MapSource and on the unit:

- map areas 1 2 3 4 5 6
- waypoints a b c d e f g
- Routes r1 r2 r3

So then on Mapsource I:
remove map area 3 - add map area 7
delete waypoint f
delete route r2 and add r4

So on Mapsource I now have:
- map areas 1 2 4 5 6 7
- waypoints a b c d e g
- Routes r1 r3 r4

What do I end up with on the unit if I take the Mapsource
data and re-load the handheld selecting to transfer maps, waypoints
and routes?

I THINK what I'll end up with on the handheld would be all of the data
- map areas 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
- waypoint a b c d e f g
- Routes r1 r2 r3 r4

and if I want to "loose" the data from the handheld I have to force
clean it with the handheld menus, right?

I agree with the last 2, but not the map areas; I /think/ that whatever
map tiles you put into MapSource end up nuking what's on the handheld,
as that's all held in the gmapsupp.img file, and as the movie says,
"There can only be one."

For wayponts and maps, yes. For maps, see my (possibly misinformed)
opinion above.

The upload will overwrite the existing gmapsupp.img file and you'll have
only the maps you just uploaded, 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7.

The routes will be the ones that were last uploaded from MapSource (a
route with the same name always overwrites an existing route).

The original waypoints, a through g will still be there and will not be
changed. There will be no new waypoints if the names and data in the
waypoints was unchanged when they were send from MapSource.

If the last uploaded waypoints had the same names and new data in them,
there would be new waypoints named a-1, b-1, c-1, d-1, e-1, f-1, g-1.

Waypoints with the same name and data will be unchanged but if you
download them to MapSource and look at their properties, it will tell
you when they were last edited.

When you download from the GPS to MapSource, it will warn you that any
downloaded data will be added to the data you currently have in
MapSource. Then, when you proceed with the download, if there are any
duplicate waypoints or route names it will question you as to if you
want to overwrite the data in MapSource with the data from the GPS or
keep the data that is in MapSource. You have to choose yes or no, there
is not provision in MapSource for changes the names of waypoints or
routes as they are being downloaded.

thanks to you both. Seems reasonable that it would work that way and I
should have connected the maps with the .img file.
