My family owns a Garmin Nuvi 200W and we recently got a Nuvi 260 in
order to have the text-to-speech feature. I assumed the two models
would have the same maps and logic. However, the 200W has been almost
flawless in giving directions around my neighborhood and the 260 makes
a lot of errors on the same routes, including telling to turn off the
freeway on a non-existent ramp. My neighborhood, and the freeway, are
over 40 years old.
Why the difference in accuracy? Does one have older software than the
other or is the software on the text-to-speech models inferior to
those on the other models? Or are the W model Nuvis better than the
smaller models? I am returning the 260 but I don't know what to
replace it with. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
The nuvi 200, 250, 260, 270's hardware should be the basically the
same, the only difference is the internal memory size and maps been
loaded. If you got problem with your 260, maybe it is caused by the
older maps or software. Just use Garmin Webupdate tool to check if you
need anything updated.

I ran webupdate and there was an update available but installing it
did not affect the navigation problem with the Nuvi 260. I am
wondering if the better performance of the 200W compared to the 260
has something to do with the fact that the 260 has Canada and Alaska
while the 200 doesn't. Could they be entirely different map sets?

Possible. What versions do they say each has?

The 260 has City Navigator North America NT data. In the information
on the device it says
nuvi 260
Software Version 3.70
GPS SW version 2.60m
The 200W has City Navigator NT (lower 48). I can't get the software
information off the device because it is out traveling, but I am
pretty sure it is the latest available version.
Before I got the first unit I recall reading, maybe in a CNET review,
that the Sirf chipset that Garmin has used for several years might be
replaced with another chipset in some of the newer units, so I am
wondering if the 200W has one of the chipsets and the 260 the other.
