I have a Nuvi 760 which is just on two years old, and which has the
integral AU/NZ maps. I'm about to embark on an extensive driving
holiday in New Zealand. I check the Garmin price on lifetime updates
for AU/NZ and it is $A189 (way more than CNNANT).
But ... (and I realise it isn't the same unit) I can currently buy a
Nuvi 265 with lifetime AU/NZ updates for $A174. In one instant Garmin
have effectively made my 760 worthless.
Thanks, Garmin.
Same here.
At the retail / new product level they need to compete with other companies
in offerings and pricing - in the "Map Update market" - they have no
competition so can make up a price. ( like Microsoft's retail/ Upgrade
licensing)

Gillette marketing in action. It has happened with printers for years.
Carefully selecting a printer could frequently end up costing you less
money than buying new ink for an old one.
But I'm puzzled as to why makes a GPS suddenly worthless when it still
runs. Give it to a friend or relative that doesn't have one. A printer
that's out of ink *is* useless.

See my other response. It's certainly not a saleable proposition with
2yo mapping.

And one that may force them to pay out more for mapping than ... (yep,
said in in the O/P)?

Nonsense. My Nuvi is 2 years old with no updates yet I've noticed no problems
with the maps.
Before I bought the Nuvi I used a 10-year-old (paper) road atlas - who buys a new
book of maps twice a year?
