Very possible, but in general the AC/DC adapter, USB etc. often to so many
voltage/ampere so in general they won't produce much more heat than suppose
to. Of course there is a chance that there is some defect which may cause
extra heat, but we don't have the same unit the OP has to know for sure.

And we may notice that because of the thinner the design the smaller the
space for heat to get out of the case, and the heat would build up faster
and hotter.

And I think my Nuvi 1490T is running hotter than the older and thicker
Nuvi 680, and much much hotter than the older SteerPilots those are 3-4
times thicker.

Good suggestion. As it turns out, my son has a 255W too. I'll just swap
cords with him and see what happens.

Let us know if that turns out to be it. I had one fail while traveling
about a month ago, though in my case the failure was that the voltage was
way too low.

Luckily, I was able to buy a replacement adapter at the next gas station,
which was a pleasant surprise.

I bet you a nickel that it will give the same result. But there is a
small chance that I might lose my nickel.

Does his unit also get as warm as yours? Comparing it under the same
conditions would be a good way to verify. You can buy Y adapters for
the accessory outlet and just plug them both in and run them in one
vehicle for a while.
